Four Decades on My Tanka Road by Sanford Goldstein Published by Modern English Tanka Press

Four Decades on My Tanka Road is a tanka treasure chest, filled with nearly five hundred poems by the acknowledged master of the genre, Sanford Goldstein. Not only has Goldstein, with his translating partners, made the classics of modern Japanese poetry available in English, he has written some of the best tanka ever rendered first in English. Six published collections of the tanka of Sanford Goldstein are compiled in this single, historic, volume by “the father of tanka in English.” For anyone who wants to understand tanka, who wants a genuine tanka experience, this book is a must-read. Sanford Goldstein’s Four Decades on My Tanka Road is where you start your own journey with the world’s oldest continually-anthologized poetic genre.

Baltimore, Maryland – December 22, 2007 – The acknowledged master of tanka poetry in English, Sanford Goldstein, has published his several tanka collections in a single volume, Four Decades on My Tanka Road. This 336-page volume from Modern English Tanka Press is the must-read collection of Goldstein’s own tanka.

About Author:

Sanford Goldstein has been writing tanka for more than forty years. He has translated several modern Japanese tanka poets in co-authorship with Professor Seishi Shinoda. Goldstein is Professor Emeritus of Purdue University where he taught literature and creative writing. He was at Purdue from 1956 to 1992. During that period he was a Fulbright Professor at Nagasaki University from 1959-1961. He taught in Japan for two-year periods from 1953-55, 1959-61, 1964-66, 1970-72, 1980-82, and 1987-89. He now lives in Japan as a permanent resident. In 1992, after retiring, he went to teach at a new college in Japan—he taught there until his retirement in 2000 when he was made a Professor Emeritus to Keiwa College in Shibata, Japan, but continued as a part-time teacher there until 2005. Goldstein is now 82 years old.
